Dear Friends: I wrote a "rose" to the News-Leader shortly after attending this wonderful event, but sadly it was not published. Therefore, let me take this time to personally say how much my entire family enjoyed coming to the " Art and Romance of Chocolate", and to commend your group on putting on one of the best fund raisers that I have ever attended! I know from my own experience how much work an event of this kind takes to be successful, and you can all be proud that yours was overwhelmingly so. It was delightful to taste so many types of unusual desserts, candies, and even a few unconventional entries using beef and pork. I couldn't stop talking about it for days. I hope you continue to put on this event for years to come. Bravo!

Well, if January is any indication, most of us could believe that winter either is virtually over or has given Springfield a pass for this year. We can only hope, right? For now, let’s enjoy the moment and fill our thoughts with backyard garden plans and the crazy times that occupied the first month of 2012.
On Sunday, January 22nd, “Friends” held its 11th Annual Art and Romance of Chocolate Fundraising Event at the MSU Brick City Art Gallery. For three hours, over 325 attendees were treated to samples of delicious chocolate-based creations prepared by teams from eighteen local restaurants, candy shops, cafes, culinary schools, and stores. The public was invited to cast votes for the best offerings in five categories: Candy, Patisserie, Desserts, Chocolate Showpiece, and People’s Choice. The winner of a sixth category (Originality) was selected by a panel of five judges. To call the day a success would be an understatement. Well-deserved kudos must go to the Committee Co-Chairs, Sandy Buckner and Robin Coulter Crabb, and the entire Chocolate team for their planning and work that made those three hours such a success. Special thanks are also extended once again to MSU Brick City Gallery and Robin Lowe for the use of the gallery space, and to our Supporting Financial Sponsors whose kind donations helped to raise the visibility of the event within the Springfield area: Guaranty Bank, State Farm Mike Breeding Agency, Dr. and Mrs. “Bucky” Buckner, Dr. and Mrs. John Steinberg, and the Center for Plastic Surgery (Drs. Carl Price, Arthur Hawes, and Robert Shaw). And finally, our sincere thanks to the participating vendors who dazzled attendees with their imagination and creativity. Check out the “Friends” page of this website for the links to the various chocolate participants.
So what is in store in the coming months? The Social and Reception Committees are looking into a members-only spring gallery event linked to an upcoming exhibit. Keep checking our website for details.
Our Nominations Committee (Betty Shook – Chair, Ruth Penaherrera-Norton, Jack Crabb, and Robin Coulter Crabb) has begun to seek nominations for the April 2012 – March 2013 Board of Directors. The new Board will be elected during the April 19th General Membership Meeting. Members interested in having greater involvement in the organization through Board participation should contact the Committee members as soon as possible.
Until next time, take care and happy trails…….
