FOSAM - REVIEW OF THE YEAR: April 2012-March2013 by Departing President Allen St-Onge
Building
upon the momentum that was generated after last year’s General Membership
Meeting, FOSAM has made significant progress in many areas. What follows below will cover some of the
highlights that immediately come to mind but it will, by no means, be an
all-inclusive list of our successes.
Our Working Committee structure of 12 committees that shares the workload in terms of rebuilding the group and carrying out our activities and mandate continues to be a great success. As always, the vast majority of the work is carried out by a solid core of dedicated volunteers who consistently manage to find the time and energy to put everything together. The latest example is the major effort being expended by FOSAM members in the Courtyard Garden under the leadership of Jack Crabb and Mary Sue Hoban.
FOSAM continues to embrace the era of social media with its website, e-mail, Facebook, online payments and ticket sales capabilities. Overall, these have produced significant cost-savings, improved communications, and increased public awareness. Along with the recent amazing change to our website’s overall look, thanks must go to Luci and Jim March and their website design committee for implementing these improvements.
FOSAM’s fundraising efforts have been extremely successful, especially our annual Art and Romance of Chocolate (ARC) event (which realized approximately a 300% increase in funds raised over last year’s event while coming in under budget), social gatherings at WineStyles, and various raffles. Our gratitude is extended to so many FOSAM team members for these successes, especially to Jack and Robin Coulter Crabb, Sandy and Wordy Buckner, Susie and Charlie Moody, and Linda Peacock.
Our membership goal of 100 was finally broken before the end of the calendar year 2012. Through the outstanding efforts of Jack Crabb and his membership committee team, we are seeing membership levels increasing to a point not seen in many years. FOSAM is currently standing at 134 members which is well on our way to achieving the goal of 200 members by the end of 2013.
FOSAM continues to see success in obtaining needed sponsorships, both associated with a specific event and unsolicited donations, and also through the group’s new Member-Partner categories. Both the increases in membership and the new sponsorships and donations are signs that we are a trusted, viable organization and that FOSAM is doing the correct things in support of the museum.
While FOSAM is gathering greater name recognition within the city and surrounding area, the group still needs to pursue greater visibility and distinctiveness. Increased use of media to promote our organization and its events will be required. The use of increased media coverage of what FOSAM does and can do on behalf of the museum was clearly evident in the conduct of the January 2013 ARC event.
FOSAM continued its tradition of hosting excellent museum receptions. The opening receptions for the 2012 MOAK and 2013 David Plank exhibitions were stellar examples of what Linda Peacock and her Receptions Committee team have assembled over the past several years.
After being away for several years, FOSAM is back in the artwork acquisitions business, thanks to the efforts of our fundraising team. This past year, FOSAM made two purchases for the museum’s permanent collection: “Winter Sunrise” by Catherine P. O’Neill from the 2012 Watercolor USA exhibit and, in collaboration with SMMA, “Wrong Way Down a One Way Street” by Robyn Cook from the 2012 MOAK exhibit.
Overall, these past 12 months have been very rewarding for FOSAM. The general result has been a continuation of the upward trend that started 2.5 years ago to rebuild the group and to earn positive recognition for what the group can do for the museum. All of this would not have been possible, if not for the support of FOSAM membership and most importantly, the work and effort of the 2012 – 2013 Board of Directors and Committee Chairs.
As I step down from the FOSAM Presidency, I offer to them and to all of you, my sincere thanks for your support and energy. We will need more of it to accomplish the tasks facing us in the year ahead. And finally, I ask that you give your full support and encouragement to your new leadership team of Jack Crabb (President), Mary Sue Hoban (Vice-President) and the 2013 – 2014 FOSAM Board of Directors.
Thank you.
